Spotted dove, Matangi, Waikato

Post by Neil Fitzgerald »

Saw a spotted dove today as I walked along Bruntwood Rd (about halfway between Hamilton and Cambridge). They seem to be spreading steadily in, and out of Hamilton.

Just saw a spotted dove in Gordonton village, a kew km north of Hamilton. They're pretty well established around northern Hamilton these days, but this is the first I've seen this far out.

They're very common here on the North Shore.

First noticed them about 7/8 years ago and they've grown in numbers very fast.

There were have been some released that lived down Horrell Road in Morrinsville for the last 10 years, but they seem to be dwindling these days, as i only often see just one. I have also seen them very often in Whangarei out the back of Kamo

What is the Southernmost area at which they can be seen? I saw a few at New Caledonia some time ago but have never seen them in New Zealand. If somebody could answer, this would be appreciated.

They appear to be somewhat sporadically spread around the place depending on where people have released them. I know for certain good places to see them are the Auckland Botanical Gardens and also Manukau and south Auckland

A person who used to live near Waitomo released some a few years ago and they persist in small numbers. Not a good place to try to see them though.

Hi SomesBirder

Anyone who joins OSNZ gets a free copy of the Atlas of Bird Distribution in New Zealand 1999-2004, which is worth way more than a year's membership
