A song thrush was singing at Te One (main Chatham Island) about 8:00 am on a fine, calm morning on 5 May.

The Chatham's bird is taking advantage of the bend in the date-line!
Heard my first one on the morning of 6th May, one day later than Colin's.
This was singing on the banks of the Avon next to Christ's College as I walked to
the museum for my Thurs. volunteer job.

And since this topic is Songthrushes, this autumn and last autumn also, I've noticed thrushes gobbling up fat and rolled oats from the bird feeing table. Perhaps that's why he's singing? Is this feeding related to the really dry conditions at present?
There is plenty of fruit around though.

Re: Early song thrush on Chatham Island
Here in Wanganui, I noted a Song Thrush burst briefly into song in the early morning of 25th April. It was next noted on 1st May, when it sang for almost 20 minutes. Since then, what seems to be the same bird (based on location), has been singing most mornings and, now, also in the evening.
