kinda wish I'd followed it up but, about November, on the NZ Waterfowler Facebook page someone was insistent on a flock of about 50 American Woodducks on a dam near Brightwater. It was in the comments section about American Woodducks and people were bragging about shooting them at different times in NZ. I'd replied, asking if the commentator meant Australian Woodducks but they were adamant. I still think they were mistaken and it needs to be taken with an ounce of salt. American Woodducks are "Harrier Magnets" if pinioned and wouldn't last as they described; unpinioned, they would roam and there would be odd sightings around the area, which there aren't... but yeah, seems they have other ponds in the area

I have been trying to catch up with those birds for a while so good to see they are about and doing ok. I spoke to someone from Forest and Bird a while back who mentioned that they came across a group of wood duck on a property close to Hoddy Pond where they have been doing a restoration planting project. I guess the birds move around across a number of created ponds/wetlands in this area.

Saw two females, a drake, and a duckling a couple of days ago. Good to see them still breeding.

Hi Cardinal, Please could you advise where you saw the birds. This is a late breeding record but great to know they are still trying - I think its still touch-and-go as to whether the species establishes here long-term. David

OK, I saw the birds that Cardinal photographed - this morning [29 March] they were on the Playhouse Pond, off Westdale Road. David
