Another Golden Bay dabchick .... and Bittern images

Postby Mtn Breeze » Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:36 pm

Hi everyone,

I think the dabchicks on Lake Kilarney in Takaka are pretty well known now but I discovered another (at this stage) lone bird on a pond on private land in the Anatoki area.

I do plan on going back to see if there is more than one and hopefully obtain some images.

Also saw a bittern at Parapara this afternoon.

Matt.

ps - Found the Parapara bittern again this evening.

I like the pictures too but the news about Dabchicks doing OK on the Mainland is really cool. Thanks for the update.

Hi Matt, I've been in the Bay here for nearly 7 years now and although I've heard the Bitterns booming out at Mangarakai Swamp; I've never actually seen one. Which part of the Parapara estuary/lagoon did you see the one you got the great shots of? They turn up in all sorts of places semi-regularly (once even in a farmer's dairy farm paddock opposite the 3 Oaks close to town) but I always hear about them too late to get eyes on it. Much appreciated for any help.

Hi Ken,

Here is an 'X marks the spot' map for your reference. The red crosses are where I saw the bittern/s, purple cross where I saw the fernbird.

Cheers,

Matt.

Thanks Matt, much appreciated. The bittern locations are all easily 'scopeable' from the causeway road, I'll keep an eye out for them.
Ken.
