Antarctic Fulmar, Catlins

Postby Richard Schofield » Sun May 30, 2021 7:19 pm

It's not in the same league as events in Canterbury today, but I watched an Antarctic Fulmar down to about 50m from Long Point, Catlins coast, this afternoon.

Hello Richard

There are a few Antarctic Fulmars about at present. Attached is a picture of a beach wrecked Antarctic Fulmar found on Muriwai Beach by Graham Lowther on the 26th of May. This bird will be taken to the Auckland Museum for use as a specimen.

Regards

Must have been a beautiful sight Richard, and a good record. No obvious passage in an hour watching from Stirling point, Bluff yesterday afternoon. Best was a single Southern Royal albert and loose flock of cape petrels that came in behind a commercial fishing boat (brave souls) amongst a gaggle of buller's and (fewer) white-caps.

Cheers,
Sean
