Kōkako in the wild, Mt Bruce

Postby Michael Szabo » Tue Apr 02, 2024 6:34 pm

Louise Thomas reports seeing a pair of unbanded North Island Kōkako in the wild on the Loop Track at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre (Mt Bruce) in the Wairarapa over the Easter weekend. She says they were "about 150m from the top going through the bush side."

I see that Mt Bruce is also currently undertaking a breed and release program for Y/C Kakariki - so another good reason to visit.

Y/C Kakariki seem to me to be sliding quietly to extinction on the mainland - just too many rat plagues to often - hopefully there is enough rat control at Mt Bruce to maintain a population.

Cheers
Jim
