Bombay Hills - Since the beginning of October up till around 24th October I heard at least one a day, sometimes 2 and on occasions 3. From 24th until 3rd November I never heard any. I am presuming they are all stopping off on their way south and that there seems to be "waves" of migration - weather systems?

Still only 1 heard so far this season around Pukerua Bay, Paekakariki area - if there are low numbers around birds may not be settling but ranging more widely in search of mates?

Hearing the occasional bird but still very infrequent.
Only one bird heard calling over 3 hours at Mt Bruce in the Wairarapa on Sunday.

Three cuckoos in my fruit trees yesterday evening, 'cheeuuw' calling at each other with lots of wing movement accompanying each call. Discussing something interesting.

Some serious cuckoo action in my gum and blackwood trees in Eketahuna yesterday. Initially a pair were flying around together; one was feeding the other (courtship?) and later in the day, there were a whole lot of them congregating, high in some blue gum - there were at least six of them.

Very few shining cuckoos in Wellington this year. Watched two for a short while today at George Denton Park play area. They were in tall eucalypt at furthest corner of park from road. First time I have seen them mating. This park is just over the fence from Zealandia and it is not uncommon to see whiteheads and saddlebacks outside the reserve.
