Jim Norris and I did a wader count today at four estuaries, including the Whanganui, one north of here, and two south of here. Only at the Lagoon at the Turakina River mouth did we find an interesting bird - namely two Turnstone - not uncommon in many parts of NZ, but rare along this part of the west coast. The two birds were busy digging in the sand, but not exactly sure why. This location is also a great place for black-fronted dotterels, and today was no exception. They are such a beautiful little bird. We thoroughly enjoyed a great day out, seeing all the usual suspects at the four locations, plus the unexpected turnstones at Turakina.
