Unusual bird - Vanellus Coronatus?

Postby Nizzy » Fri Oct 05, 2018 9:59 am

Vanellus Coronatus?. I have been researching online to try and identify a bird that I saw in New Lynn, Auckland on Wednesday 3 October at approximately 4pm. It was just walking along Astley Avenue, near Neville Street. It looked like a seabird. Its head was black and white, its body was long and sleek, and the wings and body were a fawn colour. It had long legs. I have identified it provisionally as a Vanellus Coronatus, as the pictures I have seen of this bird most closely resemble the bird I saw. I don't know if it is common in New Zealand, so thought I would just bring the sighting to the attention of the members of this forum.
