Fairy prions wrecking

Postby Alan Tennyson » Wed Jan 23, 2019 11:14 am

At this time of year, the fairy prions are fledging and strong onshore winds seem to be a problem for them. On Monday (21 Jan 2019) we saw a dozen fairy prions flying south along the beach and over the waves at Waikanae Beach. In many years on this coast I have never seen so many prions flying close to the shore. A live one was being washed about in the waves & a few others had recently washed up dead, so if we get more strong NW winds there could be a high casualty rate this season.
