White-winged Black Tern and the Kaituna Diversion

Postby Tim Barnard » Sun Apr 28, 2019 12:23 pm

I went to the back of Maketu Estuary/Kaituna River mouth for the first time this summer. In about a month, the Kaituna will be redirected back through the estuary. The old meadows have been ripped up leaving some prime wader territory at the moment ...

The site was full of birds, the best being two Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, one Pectoral Sandpiper, Great white egret and a distant view of a White-winged black tern.

Well worth a look if you are in the area ...
All the best,
Tim
