Common Tern in breeding plumage, Big Sand Island

Postby phil hammond » Sat Jun 06, 2020 9:38 pm

It was the OSNZ census of the Kaipara today. Marie Ward, Sue Cook, Bill Abbot and I were allocated the north end of Big Sand. Darren Markin joined us

Among 21 species of wader, tern and gull counted there were one each of:

Common Tern
Little Tern
Fairy Tern
Greater Sand Plover
Whimbrel

The Common Tern was in breeding plumage with cap down to the top of it's bill

With White-fronts and Caspians also present we had 5 tern sp all close together.
