Any Cape Barren Geese seen elsewhere in Canterbury are likely to be captive bred birds, like the ones Anita reported from the Rakaia. A breeding flock is located inland from Tynwald near Ashburton and the juvs are allowed to fly free. There is also a group near Styx wetland that are domestic and may provide the Travis bird[s] over the years. It seems unlikely that they will expand their population in the wild as they don't have enough suitable habitat that isn't very disturbed apart from Lake Ellesmere and not enough of them have yet made it there.
