5 Chestnut-breasted shelducks, tip lagoon Invercargill

Five chestnut-breasted shelducks at the tip lagoon, Invercargill at lunchtime today. Record shot of three of the birds attached - female bird with head showing.
Birds were in a loose group; one adult pair and three other birds with lesser extent of white markings around eyes and bill bases - immatures?

All five birds there this evening snoozing on posts in the middle of the lagoon.

There were six Chestnut-breasted shelducks present at 1700 today; same five birds as yesterday plus another female type. Horrible cropped phone-scoped shot of all six briefly in the same view together. Interesting to see some interaction with the Paradise shelducks (which they outnumbered on the lagoon six to two while I was watching). Photo shows one (immature drake?) bird sharing a perch with a female parry. Drake parry was roosting on a post nearby, woke up, preened, then chased the CBS off and took up the perch himself.

Hope they will breed next year...in Australia they were winter breeders.

Quick look today with binos only; at least three CB shelducks still present.

5 CB shelduck present again today, roosting on island in New River estuary, viewed from tip lagoon hide.

Lunchtime today; same spot as yesterday, six birds present.

I saw there 6 birds already on 13.11., together with Tom Noah and Matthias Fehlow. Record shots are available on request!
