Marsh Sandpiper on the Whanganui River Estuary

Postby Paul Gibson » Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:43 pm

This evening Jim Norris and I found a Marsh Sandpiper on the Whanganui Estuary, associating, as they do, with Pied Stilts. A rare bird for here, although we did have one visit in March 2021. After some close views for about 10 minutes, the bird flew down stream and disappeared from view.

I had a quick look for the Marsh Sandpiper this morning at 11.30am (about half tide). No sign if it and I only found 5 Pied Stilts, the birds it was associating with yesterday. This not the best time to be checking the Whanganui estuary as some areas near the river proper are beyond a drop in the mudfllat levels that causes a restriction of visibility.
