This afternoon I found a Whimbrel on the Whanganui River Estuary, not uncommon in NZ, but rare for Whanganui. See distant picture below.

Do you record many Pacific golden plover in the Whanganui estuary area Paul? I am on holiday up North and saw this individual today on the seaward side of the long beach to the South of the river mouth.

Hi Sean, Yes, there has been a pair of golden plovers on the Whanganui Estuary for a week or two, I saw one today, pictured below, likely the same bird you photographed. An interesting location where you saw it. They are rare on the Whanganui, but this year has turned up all sorts of unusual species, been a good year for us. The whimbrel has not been seen now for several weeks.
