Black-Tailed Godwit - Kawhia Harbour

Postby Michael » Thu Dec 12, 2019 6:14 pm

Today on the Kawhia Harbour census, there was a single Black-Tailed Godwit on a shellbank at the far-east of the harbour near Oparau. The bird had a distinctive, straight shortish (for a godwit) black bill which had originally led me to believe it was an Asian Dowitcher (apologies to all those who I got excited  ); however the wing bars and tail pattern along with the overall smudginess of the bird has since persuaded me it is a blackwit. Has anyone ever noted blackwits with all black bills before?

There were also two Pectoral Sandpipers on Te Motu Island, and around 3000 godwits.

A few screenshots showing the blawit (the dark smudgy chap in the foreground).
