Leucistic Banded Rail, Cooks Beach
There have been a couple of recent, reliable, reports of a leucistic Bsnded Rail at Cooks Beach, across the estuary from Whitianga (most recently, yesterday). The spot is about 50 meters below the the footbridge that provides access from the estuary at the west end of Cooks Beach to the Shakespeares Cliff tracks. I spent around 90 minutes there today over low tide without seeing it, just 2 "normal" birds seen. Nigel Milius

Local wildlife photographer Tracey Thornton managed to get a couple of great shots of this bird which she has kindly let me put on here. Haven't yet seen it myself, hopefully soon! Nigel Milius

Not as good as Tracey's pictures that I posted the other day, but nice to see the bird this morning with a "normal" coloured one for company. Nigel Milius
