Royal Spoonbill Lake Okareka

Postby Mike Vincent » Fri Jan 17, 2020 9:30 pm

There was a Royal Spoonbill on the lake edge at Lake Okareka this afternoon adjacent to the walkway accessible from Acacia Rd. I have never seen one here before. There was a strong South easterly blowing and I wonder if it had come across from the BOP.

Great shot Mike ... they do often frequent Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti (Ohau Channel). An excellent record for Okareka nonetheless ...
Cheers

It was there earlier that day when we met a local who said he a had seen a "white heron" the day before associating with canada geese. He did not know about spoonbills and we think it was probably the same bird. It was just east of the hide with canada geese and pied stilts and looked quite at home, preening and feeding. https://ebird.org/atlasnz/checklist/S63466469
