Black Noddy, Milford Beach, Jan 6, 2020

Postby wazzagonewild » Tue Jan 21, 2020 1:05 pm

Brian Kuan photographed a black noddy at Milford Beach on the North Shore on Jan 6, 2020. He posted this lovely photo of it to Instagram yesterday. According to Brian, "I almost missed seeing it as it flew in and hid behind some rocks". He checked for it on multiple occasions after it was first seen, but didn't find it again. I've encouraged him to submit a UBR and to share more photographs.

What an amazing find!

I think it looks better for Black noddy. Longer finer bill, with a white cap and a darker overall colour. Still an awesome sighting!

Yeah, I think you're correct. I've never seen either species, so was swayed towards brown noddy by the brown colouration on the chest and wings, but the cap and long fine bill are good for black noddy it seems. Brian said he will share more photos too.

They breed in reasonable numbers on Raoul island these days Jan, and I imagine a few on the other islands nearby too, so as their numbers increase there following eradication of rats etc I suspect we’ll see more of them.

Hi All, thank you for the interest in my latest find. I am relatively new bird watching, so was not experienced in identifying birds.
Here are some additional photos I took that day:
