Whiskered Tern, Balclutha

Postby Richard Schofield » Fri Jan 31, 2020 10:13 pm

While I was checking out a Banded Dotterel on Balclutha airfield just before sunset this evening (found by Suzanne this morning, and first I'm aware of in Balclutha for 15+ years) an adult Whiskered Tern flew across the runway, and joined with a small party of Black-fronted Terns flying downriver. I relocated it on a gravel island by the airport buildings, where it appeared to be settling down for the night.

At first light this morning all the terns (& most of the gulls) had headed away for the day, presumably somewhere up the Clutha Valley. Will check again this evening.

Nice find Richard!
