I saw the bird early on Tuesday morning. It was swimming close to shore heading north and coming onto the beach if people were not too close. I went home and reported it to doc, but the pics others took make it look like a particularly healthy bird doing its thing (I was walking dogs and did mot have camera - damn!)! I went back to beach a bit later and drove for quite a way along it North but no sighting, so either it had just kept going north or headed out to sea, so going to Foxton now will probably be a waste of time

Thomas Mattern has pointed out that it was an Erect-crested Penguin rather than Fiordland.
