This matter seems pertinent to another discussion on this blog:

Here is a bit more on the story, and you won't have to pay for it: http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/ ... -years.htm

Will be interesting to see what comes out of the big reveal on Wednesday.

the photo is (almost) indisputably a living night parrot. It will certainly be most interesting to hear the results of the announcements on Wednesday.

In this second interview with John Young he says he has travelled 11,000 kilometres on a bike, 320,000 kilometres in a vehicle and spent 17,000 hours in the field over fifteen years searching for the night parrot.

"To sit there and watch this holy grail come out, like some sort of mythical ghost... it puffed itself up in some sort of alien shape, almost doubling its size, shaped like an echidna, raking it's head on the ground... it was electrifying."

Inspiring stuff!

I understand why some Aussie birders are treating this story with caution. John Young has an unresolved issue with an earlier claim; what has beocme known as "The Fig Parrot Story".

This news story summarises the nub of the Fig Parrot concerns:

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/he ... 1112985389

This is some of the resulting Birding-Au discussion:

http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/arc ... 00435.html

I can see why Aussie birders are just a tad cagey. The two have paralells. And it does so illustrate the limitations of photographs unless backed by a detailed record as discussed elsewhere ad nauseam on this blog.

A parrot that blows itself up to look like an echidna? He can't have read much about Kakapo then.
This is a fascinating article, I really hope it's kosher this time.
We tried to look at every dead green bird down the Birdsville Track into S Australia in mid '00s [can't remember yr. off hand] but of course no luck.
