NZ Falcon Hamilton

Postby SteveG » Sun Oct 25, 2015 9:27 am

Yes, i couldnt believe it too, at home, north end of Hamilton on the river near the equestrian centre. Yesterday about 4pm. I was in the garden putting up pergola posts, wife said "thats looks like a hawk". I turned round expecting to see one of the harriers that patrol along river road and sometimes circle the trees on the section, and saw it land on a branch, very clear view. The blackbirds and thrushes were going crackers. It stayed there maybe 20 seconds, and then swooped down very low and dissapeared behind other vegetation, presumably in pursuit of some quarry

There have been a few records of falcon in Hamilton in recent times - see the thread at viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2061&p=8947 - but I think this is the first for a couple of years. Very nice record, great to know they're still around.

Always a good sighting for Hamilton. What part of town was it?

Hey Neil. Spotted this bird beside the river walk on Awatere Drive... the bird flew west to east and landed in large trees on opposite side of river. Approx 1 minute later it flew back in the same direction it had came from.

Thanks. Not too far from some earlier sightings (viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4970&p=24251, viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2061&p=8947).
Be nice if it (they?) has decided to stick around.

Just had a sighting passed on to me of a falcon on the river path, Hamilton East near Waikato Regional Council building. Not sure if it was this morning, but it was recent.

Falcon continue to be seen regularly in Hamilton. A colleague has seen one on several occasions, including flying over our office building (near the university) in the past few days. Also found this video of a falcon eating something at Hamilton Garden. It appears to have been taken last Thursday.

Just been sent photos of a falcon at the A J Seeley Gully Reserve (Armagh St entrance) in Hamilton, taken . Seen at 09:15 yesterday. Apparently the second time one has been seen there recently. Judging from the photos, it allowed a very close approach.
