Cairns - any recommendations on a guide?

Postby Peter Hodge » Thu May 26, 2016 12:52 pm

Hi all

I'm going to Cairns, Queensland, for a couple of weeks in July. First up I'm planning to do half or full day guided trip. I'm wondering if anyone has been to Cairns recently (i.e., last few year) and has any recommendations for a good guide. I see there are several operating in Cairns or nearby, but any advice would be welcome.

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter

Alan Gillanders is absolutely terrific, very ethical and goes well out of his way for you. He also has a good knowledge of golden bowerbirds. His website is http://www.alanswildlifetours.com.au/.
Del Richards is also a great guide and your best bet for the blue-faced parrot finch. His website is http://www.finefeathertours.com.au/.

Let me know if you need any advice on places in the Cairns area.

Have a great time - I'm back there in the summer and can't wait.

Thanks Imogen, both those guides look great. And yes, I'd be very interested in your advice on good places.

Cheers,
Peter

Yes definitely recommend Alan Gillanders. My wife and I live in Teal Valley near Nelson for 6 months of the year and on the Atherton Tablelands for the other 6 months. Although we will be in Peppimenarti Aboriginal Community NT for June we will be back in July and I would be happy to go birding with you and/or point you in the right direction for difficult species to find. Our place is in the middle of a rainforest block so we get rainforest specialities like Victoria's Riflebird at our back door. Don Hadden

Don, that's very kind of you, thank you. We're in Cairns in mid July, so I'll email you a little closer to the time.

Hi Peter

Within range of Cairns is:
Cattana Wetlands - good for water and bush birds
Yorkey's Knob - the road and car park running alongside the golf course has been good at all times of the year
Mangrove Walk at the airport - mind the mossies
The Esplanade, obviously

Going further afield, I love these places:
Hastie's Swamp
Abbatior Swamp
Bustard Downs
Daintree

Highly recommend Doug Herrington if you are further north in the Port Douglas and Daintree area.
