Kaka on the Mount

Postby FlyingKiwiGirl » Wed Nov 22, 2017 9:34 pm

Can anyone confirm if kaka have been heard/seen actually on Mt Maunganui before. I used to spend a fair bit of time at the Mount when I lived in the Bay but not as early as it was this morning when I'm sure I heard several kaka calling and chattering to each other around 4am. I think I read that they do come over from the Waikato occasionally and are on Mayor Island but this sounded like 2-4 birds, perhaps they are nesting?

Hi
Yes there's an ebird record with a nice photo. They do turn up around the coast from time to time.
Cheers

Two kaka seen on the Mount this morning at about 09.00 in a wooded area above Pilots Quay and fairly low down the hill. Seen by my partner who climbs the Mount daily. She had not seen them before.
