Allegedly wild Cape Barren Goose - Katikati Bird Gardens

Postby Liam Ballard » Tue Nov 21, 2017 12:48 pm

Just got the eBird alert for this bird and immediately dismissed it out of hand - I have been to the Katikati Bird Gardens before and passed this one off as clearly a captive bird. However, in the comments for this sighting, Jill Duncan and Ken Bisset stated that the owner says the bird is not captive...
I am a skeptic here - one of my fondest childhood memories of Tauranga is picking up one of these birds! Surely a wild bird would be far more wary and be able to fly... More details would be fantastic- are these people talking about the normal CB geese or is this an extra that has turned up?

Hopefully whoever is in charge of managing this stuff for Tauranga will get onto it...

Thoughts? Facts? Opinions? Anecdotes?.
Cheers,

doesn`t mean squat. It is probably one that has wandered off from its new home and ended up at a bird friendly place?I know for a fact that the living arty park had some in Tauranga before their demise and would have homed the somewhere?

Living Art Wildlife Park (not Arty Park). It closed in 2011.

Four of us went down to the Katikati Bird Gardens on Thursday, more for a day out than anything. We quizzed the owner quite a bit about the C B Goose and got varying inconsistent answers. The goose was VERY tame, tending to follow us closely for a while. Not much doubt about it I'm afraid, its "plastic".

Cheers for clearing that up Grahame - I would hate to miss a truly wild bird! Also thanks for your help at Miranda yesterday!
