Re: Australian (chestnut-breasted) Shelduck TIP lagoon, invercargill
Hi all, I went for a quick look for the Northern Shoveler on the 30th before taking the boat to Stewart Island/Rakiura. Didn't find it. Had no idea there were Chestnut Brested Shelducks until informed by Leslie Feasey who I met on the Wrybill pelagic. On review, looks like I did however get a couple of crappy photos of one Chestnut Breasted Shelduck, hanging out with the Paradise Shelducks on the esturine island:

well, we had a mash sand piper drop in while looking around but no luck on both species of birds but at low tide if that has anything to do with it

One female Chestnut-breasted Shelduck roosting on island to west of the lagoon this afternoon, between 2.00pm and 3.30pm. No sign of the other female or males on the island or the lagoon, but there were a few Paradise Shelduck present.

Reports on eBird for 22 January suggest there may be as many as 7 Chestnut-breasted Shelducks currently at Tip Lagoon - Five males and two females. Seen and positively identified by visiting Australian birders. I have asked Phil Rhodes to check it out.

I scoped the lagoon yesterday evening but no sign of the Aussie Shelducks, saw 5 male parries but nothing else. The lagoon was full of wildfowl due to the dry conditions, most Pied Stilts I have ever seen there. Didn't get chance to check out the adjoining estuary so they may be there or at the Clifton oxidation ponds in Lake Street.
