Goldfinch singing in Winter

Postby Jim Kirker » Sat Jun 09, 2018 3:53 pm

A goldfinch was singing yesterday afternoon from small trees at Burrett reserve in Penrose Auckland. Lovely sunny day but I was surprised to hear a goldfinch singing in winter. Has anyone else heard this ?

Hi Jim,
They haven't stopped down here in ChCh.
There was even a rather soggy looking Thrush singing just before sunset last Thurs.

It's fairly nir.al for songbirds to tune up again in autumn/early winter as the daylight hours are similar to their spring breeding season. A sunny break between rainy days is particularly conclusive to a burst of morning and evening song. Went for a short walk in urban Morrinsville today and heard several goldfinch and Greenfinch really going for it.
