Forest bird song ID ?

Postby Jim Kirker » Tue Jun 26, 2018 5:52 pm

Natalie and I heard this quiet song a few times in the Ngongotaha forest on Sunday morning and I think it must be a grey warbler subsong, but not sure. There were tomtits, fantails, whiteheads a robin and a bellbird there and we heard the typical grey warbler song too.

Yep, it’s part of their alarm song I think? It’s a very weird call though. Can’t say I’ve heard it very often, but sounds part of their alarm call or certainly the beginning of their full call.

I agree it's a Grey Warbler but not sure if it sounds particularly alarmed--I'd go with a lazy subsong either because it's winter or maybe a young bird practising.

Quite a variable little dude the warbla.
