Fernbird is also very interesting for the area Bob, not found nearby although it could well have traveled downstream from the Kopuatai Peat Dome.

Glossy Ibis at the spot marked on Oscar's map at 1330. Cattle Egrets (21) in fields with cattle at right hand end of Sandy Beach Road. Spoonbills in flooded paddock.

If anyone could confirm the fernbird and give an idea if there are a few there or if it might indeed be a stray I'd be very interested.

Lisa and I found the ibis this morning around 9am but this time it was out in the middle of the dairy paddocks with the egret flock (just picking around the cows). It went AWOL though and we couldn't relocate it for about an hour. Still around I guess!

That's interesting Russ. That was the same place that I found it very early last Sunday, so perhaps it feeds with the cattle Egrets and cows early morning, then moves into the flooded marshland later. It flew over the bank about 0900 ish if I recall, so that fits with your finding.

Les is looking at the ibis right now (feeding with egrets in the paddocks)--830am so it does seem like early morning with the cattle flock is how it starts off it's morning routine!

It was a big 3.4m tide at around 7.30 this morning so the flooded paddock beside the river, where it was first seen, would have been under water when Les was there. The state of the tide has a big influence on birding there.
