Waikato Kaka

Postby Neil Fitzgerald » Wed Jun 07, 2017 10:15 pm

It's that time of the year when we get kaka visiting the lower Waikato. Yesterday evening as I drove through Pirongia just after sunset one flew along the road above the car and landed in a tree near the south end of the village.
Any at the usual spots; Taitua arboretum/Hamilton Zoo, Morrinsville? One was apparently feeding on kauri seeds in Tamahere last month.

Yeah we've had 5 or so for the last month maybe? Although only recently have the whole mob been coming across the river. I was on Great Barrier Island earlier this year and came across birds whistling that sounded exactly the same as the ones that hang out here, so i suspect that thats where they're coming from.

My wife had one at St Peters School in Cambridge about a month ago. A coworker of mine who lives near Waitoa has had 2 on his small bush block for several months.

Have been checking Maungakawa and Taitua for a couple winters now with no luck yet.

This morning I was sent a photo taken on a phone of a kaka in flight with a tui in pursuit, taken just a hundred m or so from my office.
I often forget to report kaka seen around here in winter. Not common, but regular each winter/spring.

Coming home this afternoon a kaka flew in front of our car, beautifully lit up by the autumn sun, at the end of Woodlands Rd, just off Gordonton Rd (State Highway 1B). We get the odd one or a few visit the district most winters in recent years, but this one seems a bit earlier than usual.

Heard Kaka flying over Bombay at 11.30pm two nights ago. Not sure how many birds. Single Kaka in Pukekohe this morning sitting in a tall macrocarpa calling loudly - could not see any other birds. This was in a small area of bush with native trees in the center of town.

Had a message on my phone on Friday afternoon that a kaka was on the University of Waikato campus, about 50 m from my office. Does seem to be early this year.

There was a single kaka at Ruakura on the morning of 19 April. Hasn't been seen again since then.

Heard a few kaka today at Pukemokemoke Reserve, Tauhei. They're often there in the winter, but this is the first time I've encountered them this year, and missed them entirely last year.
