Two Hoary-headed Grebe right beside the platform today, and one Crested Grebe nearby. I could just make out another 3 Crested Grebe way out in the lake (south of the platform).

Stopped at Elterwater this morning. Spotted a crested grebe on the far side of the lake almost immediately, and a young hoary head cruised by very close after about half an hour. It then disappeared among the dead trees left of the lookout and played hide and seek for a while, until an older bird turned up further out in the middle of the lake. Never did manage a photo but happy to see them.

Re: Jan 12--Hoary-headed Grebe at Elterwater
The highlight of a brief visit to Elterwater today was two hoary-headed grebes with a grebeling(?), so they're breeding again. Also a pair of crested grebes and lots of shovelers in the open water, but couldn't pick out a northern.
