Re: miranda today

This afternoon there was a Whimbrel in with the Bar tails, but unable to pick out a Hudsonian that was apparently seen at the weekend. One observer found a small wader in with the Bar tails, that he felt might be the Little Whimbrel, but before there were clinching views, it disappeared in the now sleeping godwit crowd and we were unable to re-find it.

A very high tide came in early due to the wind making wader watching difficult, however this did produce good views of a Buller's Shearwater between Miranda and Thames

There is a Whimbrel viewable from the main hide today having occasional arguments with Bar-tailed Godwits. There is still no sign of the Northern Shoveler, so I feel it is fairly safe to assume it has departed.

Cheers,

There continues to be large increases of Godwits and Knot, but of note today were 10 Pacific Golden Plover, all actively feeding.

The first Red-necked Stint of the season flew in at 1805 to join the increase in NZ Dotterel, now at 6. Caspian Tern were at their highest I have seen here at 112, and also the highest count of Masked Lapwing at 68. The Pacific Golden Plover are now 12.

I have just heard from Paul and Igor that there was a very dull Sharpie on the stilt pond under the hide window, but only viewable from the road yesterday.

I forgot to mention that a friend of mine found a Curlew Sandpiper at miranda last Sunday (over a week ago).

The Sharpie was still on the stilt pond, but again difficult to find as it stayed close under the bank on the hide side. There were 20+ PGP's on the limekilns at 0730 and all moved out onto the mud in front of the Godwit hide as the tide went out. Viewing was difficult due to the sun reflecting off the mud.

The Sharpie on the stilt pond was showing very well today and was accompanied by two Brown Teal. Another Sharpie was in front of the godwit hide with four Turnstones and the Red-necked Stint, all showing very well in good light. No sign of any Pacific Goldies though.
