what's that bird?
Hello, i am new to the forum. live in Warkworth, north of Auckland. every summer we hear a bird calling to it's mates at nightfall, a harsh rattling, chattering call. goes back & forth from bird to bird all over the grassy section, in the dark. can anyone tell me what it might be and anywhere online i can listen to a recording to verify? i am obsessively curious!!

It could be Spur-winged plovers. If you go to New Zealand Birds Online and put in Spur-winged Plover you can listen to their calls. Good luck!

Blackbirds going to roost are noisy in the way you describe.

What came to mind was oystercatchers, or maybe parrots.

Interesting. Sounds like Cook's Petrels to me

They sound like Cook's petrels to me too. They are known to fly across the mainland in the vicinity of Warkworth on their way between feeding grounds in the Tasman and their breeding colony on Little Barrier so definitely could be. Have a listen to the recordings at NZ Birds Online and see what you think.
