Unusual duck at Sulphur Point Rotorua

Postby Mike Vincent » Sat Nov 17, 2018 2:46 pm

Can any one help me identify the duck I saw at Sulphur Point yesterday. It was bigger than a Scaup more mallard size, it was on it's own.

If the underside of the tail is white it is a female White-eyed duck from Australia. But the bill doesn't look right to me so I would assume an abnormally large NZ scaup.

HI

It looks like a NZ Scaup to me. The bill and head-shape are wrong for White-eyed Duck.

cheers

The best that I could think of would be the Blue-billed Duck from Australia, but it hasn't been seen in NZ before, not after European Settlement at least.
