Embankment Road, Lake Ellesmere

Hi all,

A very quiet evening out at Embankment Road Lake Ellesmere this evening. The lakes about the lowest I’ve seen it at this time of year, so there’s not many nice little pools that you’d usually get around now. Here’s hoping we get some substantial rain soon.

Highlight was a single male pectoral sandpiper that had me excited for a while with its rather long bill. About 12-15 wrybill, 8 SIPO, 10 odd pied stilts and atleast 60 banded Dotterel including a few of this years fledglings. No sign of the Rednecked stint, sharptailed sandpiper or second pectoral that have been reported recently.

I visited yesterday afternoon after Thursday's rain and also saw the pectoral sandpiper (thanks for the tip!) and one red-necked stint, along with the usual suspects of wrybill, stilts, and banded dotterels.

Glad you were able to catch up with it! I checked on eBird before I headed out and saw someone else had been before me and seen them haha.

This evening 1 Marsh Sandpiper, 1 Hudsonian Godwit, and 4 Pacific Golden Plover.

Already last Thursday:

Embankment Rd
60 + Wrybill
30 + Red-necked Stint
15 Bar-tailed Godwit
12 Red Knot
25 Ruddy Turnstone
Most of the birds were north of the fence line.

Towards Jarvis Rd
53 Pacific Golden Plover

100's of small waders this evening, approx 400mts north of the fence line. As stated earlier in the day by Matthias, Turnstone and RN Stint were abundant. No sign of the Red Knot or PGP or BTG, however what I believe is a Curlew SP, and 1, poss 3 Sharpies.Literally hundreds of Wrybill and Bandies.

Yep that’s a Curlew sandpiper. Good spotting!

Glad to hear we’ve had all three usual sandpipers so far this year again on the lake. Now to just find something unusual... like a Terek or a broadbill...

Sweet David thanks for the confirm. A scope would be useful with that many birds about. Too many to inspect closely with binos, however they were quite confiding.

Hi guys,
The fence at Embankment goes from North to South so which side are you saying is 'North'? Towards Yarrs is West and towards Jarvis is East.
I might have a go at seeing what's there soon but I'm getting a new hip in Feb and I can't trudge as far as once I did.
