Hi Sav, I saw two CBG at St Anne's on October 23rd last year. They were out on the island in the lagoon, late afternoon.

Thanks Fraser,

Thats the last place that I saw 2 as well, but in Nov 2017. So there might still be some lurking about there?

cheers

a group of us visited St Annes Lagoon last Friday when enroute to and from Kaikoura - no sign of any Cape Barren Geese unfortunately, and also no sign of the Australian Little Grebe that was reported there last year. Oddly, there were in fact very few birds - no big Paradise Shelduck flock, very few shoveler or Grey Teal. Its one of 3 closed game areas in Canterbury (the others being the Rakaia Rivermouth and Ahuriri Lagoon) so there's absolutely no gamebird hunting allowed, but the feel of the place reminded me of a site emptied of birds by shooting. The lagoon is currently full, with no muddy margins - so no B/F Dotterels either.

Anyone been the St Anne's since Andrew's post? Need to drive past late May.

A pair of Cape Barren geese are back at St. Anne's Lagoon, with a gosling. They were in the small pond to the right of the entrance. Nice to see them back again.

Talking of Cape Barren Geese... there are at least 5 on a patch of farmland in central Motueka. Between Thorp street and High Street. Just north of Old Wharf Rd. I was there 2 weeks ago and there were 2 pair and at least another one. Spoke to a local resident who said they have been roaming "wild" there for a year or 2.

In about four hours searching around the lake and surrounding area in early December last year, we were unable to find then.

Cheers, Grahame

Thanks for the news about the tickable St Anne's ones. Hope they are still there in mid November

Two adults with one young at St Annes Lagoon this morning. They were at the far end of the lake on right, as you enter from SH1.
