Dunnock banding in Dunedin?

Postby Eudyptula » Mon Apr 01, 2019 12:34 pm

Hi all,

When I visited the Dunedin Botanic Garden recently, I noticed that some of the dunnocks there had coloured bands on their legs. Out of curiosity, is/was there some research project going on there?

It is an Otago University Zoology Department study. I did my student summer scholarship with a PhD student who began the study in the botanic gardens back in 2010/11. He was looking mainly at the unique breeding behaviour the birds exhibit.

I think he finished up in 2012/13 but I believe the project was continued by another post-grad student for at least two years beyond this. Unsure if it is still ongoing but I’m sure someone in the Zoology department would know.
