oriental dotterel

Postby jdowding » Wed Apr 17, 2019 3:01 pm

A post today on iNat (with photo) showing a splendid oriental dotterel at Tolaga Bay. Was there on 12 March, but only posted today—no idea if it's still present. Long drive if it isn't...

Have to think this is the Ohiwa bird and possibly the Port Waikato bird again ... thanks for posting John

Do you recall how long it stayed at those sites?

Was a workmate of mine who found it! Returned from the field to see an email asking what the bird in question was. Gutting!

The ones previous stayed around a fair while but left around mid-end of March I believe.

No sign of the O-dot today (Friday) but a pure white Variable Oystercatcher was neat. 11 NZ Dots and 3 spoonbills counted. Probably the highlight locally was seeing 3 Spotted Doves in an urban yard in Tolaga Bay. Yesterday we saw one near Tikitiki so that's 4 Spotteds in 2 days---possibly the first records for the Gisborne district?

Re: Gisborne spotted doves

I saw a spotted dove at Waihirere, just up the road from Gisborne, on November 12 last year. They've been moving slowly down from the hills over the past few years - I saw one just inland from Te Karaka in 2011, and another just south of Te Karaka in 2015. I put last year's sighting on ebird, should really have added the other two as well - will do that now.
