Postby Blakewater » Thu Apr 25, 2019 10:49 am

What is making the call recorded in the attached file?
It was recorded at 10.16 pm on 22 April 2019 in the bush near Otaki Gorge, Horowhenua.

Cheers

Gordon.

Hi Gordon,

Sure is a morepork, and this call is often (but not always) given in flight, so can start soft and get louder as the bird approaches, or vice versa. It is hard to tell if you duplicated the call in this clip, or whether it is a single recording, but it does seem to trail off at one stage?

This call in the link from Xeno-Canto is another that morepork make, that often causes confusion - from Xeno-Canto

Brings back happy memories of studying these amazing birds on Mokoia Island, Lake Rotorua!

Hi Gordon
I to heard this bird many times. This morning at 6.15am this bird was close to the house . I got up and as the bird flew away all I could see was a dark coloured bird about the size of a magpie . Very interested if anyone could I.D this bird. We live approx 1k from Mt Taranaki.
