White-tummied Shovelers

Postby andrewcrossland » Tue Jul 02, 2019 9:05 pm

Following on from White-bummed Scaup, here's some pics of a white-tummied Shov photographed at Horseshoe Lake, CHCH, yesterday. at exactly the same spot that Grahame reported a possible Northern Shov (with its head tucked in) a few days before (see Canterbury Big Year topic)

I had a mate with an elderly (captive) white-fronted drake. I would love to know if it's an age thing, like what you see with Cayuga ducks. I have spent FAR too much time watching shovelers, but never seen a duck choose one of these whiter males either
