Cook Strait seabirds, 23rd February

Perhaps Sooty Shearwater for the first, and Westland Black for the second, solo birds. Westland Black are reasonably common in Cook Strait, as are White-chinned which are hard to pick from Westland Black from a distance.

Should pretty much only be westlands at this time of year. We didn’t see any white-chins about a month ago off of Kaikoura. I don’t generally see them regularly from the ferry outside of the middle of summer. I agree on the first part though likely sooties although if they were relatively small could have been either Hutton’s or Little shears but more likely to be sootys or Hutton’s.
