Re: Canterbury Big year results
From what I can remember off the top of my head. Niall Mugan was top with 137 species seen! Followed by myself on 133 and Andrew Crossland and Phil Crutchley on third equal with 130 apiece. We also managed to get 11 people over 100 species seen which is pretty awesome!
And while I didn’t win it was still a hell of a lot of fun, didn’t dedicate as much time as I’d wanted to be able to die to time commitments elsewhere meaning I missed some pretty easy birds like Mohua, GSK etc. I still saw three lifers across the year; Fulmar, Little Stint and Bugf-breasted Sandpiper and got to explore a lot more of Canterbury than I do normally which was awesome.

Following on from my post here’s the top 20. I will point out here the sheer number of checklists submitted by Bev and Phil over 2,400 between the two of them is just incredible. And has contributed huge amounts of data for the Atlas scheme.

Re: Canterbury Big year results
Well done all those guys, great birding stuff. I partic. like the Buginfested sandpiper, David! I've had a very inactive year bcos of a hip replacement which caused polymyalgia rheumatica and having to take steroids for that, has meant the cold I got in Nov is still ongoing and I'm deaf and feeble still. BUT eBird says I had 88 species in 2019, so it must be right. I did manage to go for a voyage on the Endeavour which faffed around the outer sounds and palliser bay and got me some nice seabirds, including 75 King Shags on Duffers Reef [made my day], a lifer too. All those weren't in Canterbury though. Getting out more is my New Year's Resolution.
