News item about long-tailed cuckoos

Postby Raewyn » Tue Jan 14, 2020 10:05 pm

I thought this might be of interest from our local news site https://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/231704-k ... orest.html. Unfortunately it says that there are yellowheads as well as whiteheads in the forest. Presumably that is a mistake.

I read that and when I got to the bit about yellowheads having increased more than whiteheads I had to wonder about the whole thing. Have they confirmed LTC breeding, or were they just passing through? Are they not present in other parts of the mamaku plateau?

Substitute yellowhammer for yellowhead. It's a common mistake, but there's no need to doubt the rest of the article because of it. I don't know the area but if there is open habitat for yellowhammers nearby they could have benefitted from the pest control that the long-tailed cuckoos have responded to as well.
