Lesser Sand Plover, Miranda

Postby Oscar Thomas » Tue Jan 14, 2020 7:38 pm

Seen and confirmed by staff on the Miranda field course around 10h20 on the morning of 14th Jan, in front of the Stilt Pond hide to the north on a finger of mudflat still exposed by the tide. Several of the field course attendees also took photos.

Lost to view by the time I had got there, but due to my current health problems, Oscar kindly walked up the path, found the bird and phoned me, thus fairly good views were had of interesting plumage. Many Thanks Oscar
Cheers, Grahame

The bird was on the Stilt Ponds again this afternoon, seen by myself and a couple of others. Associating with banded dotterel to the North of the hide.

I saw the bird for the first time today, however my views were affected by the heat haze and short observation time.
while I am reasonably comfortable with the identification the bill certainly looks heavy for a Lesser, and hope that people are examining the details of the bird because I would not rule out a short billed Greater yet.
