Tree Martin - Lake Ellesmere

Postby sav » Mon Feb 17, 2020 3:50 pm

Hi all,

Just before midday today I found a TREE MARTIN over Wolfe's Road, Lake Ellesmere. It was with about 10 Welcome Swallows approx 200m from the car park, flying low - hawking insects.

There were no interesting shorebirds there, and I didnt have time to check Embankment Rd.

cheers

Great find, Sav! I shot out there after work today and had no luck in ~45 mins of searching. There were many swallows hawking over the edge of the lake and roosting on maimais, but no white rump to be seen. I wonder if this is the martin seen at Bromley late last year. I spent several evenings this year scanning the roosts there, also with no success.

Yes good spotting Sav! One more reason to keep heading out this year :)

The tree martin was present in the same spot at midday today. Perched on a fence opposite some pines with a group of welcome swallows, on the very last corner before the carpark at the end of Wolfes Road.

Thanks for the tip off today Fraser. Glad you were still there when I arrived or I'd probably still have missed it!

Not seen yesterday (24 Feb) around midday. Spent about 45 minutes in the spot. Still good numbers of welcome swallows, but no Martin.
