Unknown calls at Matahi Lagoon

Postby Jim Kirker » Sun May 31, 2020 2:20 pm

This was from the edge of the Matahi lagoon in mid January, fine day with a dabchick on the lagoon. I think the ticks could be from crake but never heard the miaow before and wonder if maybe from a dabchick.

Hi Dave, I was there for about an hour and did not see a coot but dense growth blocked the view of the lagoon. Coot was actually my first thought on the day but the miaow sound put me off. Jim

Thanks Dave I've been fretting about this on and off for months and secretly hoping it was dabchicks.

The "ticks" sound like adult coot.
