The original observer is keeping an eye out for any adult birds.

Re: Nankeen Night Heron in Dannevirke
I often think of the current Nankeen colony as one of those weird and wonderful things in nature and at first glance... with the type of habitat around, it was very much a chance happening and a wonder that they established at all... If it was further north... or a lot further north as in Northland, being warmer and not to mention the type of habitat one would think they would have flourished in with mangroves and tidal harbors and became well established by now..
Whanganui seems like a very edge of their habitat or for a random pair of birds to become established and not to mention, surrounded by a sea of desert... or in this case.. a green pastoral landscape desert when a Nankeen is concerned... Google maps
BUT....
The more I read... They do indeed inhabit farmland and the like around Australia and the rest of their distribution so I am guessing all is not so bad for the current breeding population....
ALSO....
I just so happened to be in a spa pool at night and heard what I thought was a sick Peacock when I discovered that it was infact a couple of Nankeens at my partners block just over the hill from Upokongaro... Being a silent cryptic creature of the night with wings... One wonders.... Just how many habitual places and how far one Nankeen could fly at night (those young that must disperse)
Dannevirke... There seems to be some potential habitat around that neck of the woods... If a couple find Lake Wairarapa and lake ferry, then that could be great and then one thinks that once they reach the more sheltered east coast there could be more of a natural spread up north up to Gisborne
