Birding Spots around Wellington

Post by ZionCooper »

Hi all,
Just wondering if there are any good birding/bird Photography spots around Wellington.
I’m currently planning on doing Zealandia, Otari-Wilton’s Bush, and Pauhatani Reserve.
Thanks, Zion

Waikanae sandspit + estuary is my favourite area but it's a bit far from the city. Same for Queen Elizabeth 2 park.

Wellington Botanic Garden is also good for forest species and the coast from Island Bay to Owhiro Bay can be good for Reef Herons and passing seabirds that can sometimes include albatrosses and giant petrels (accessible via the #1 bus). Chaffers Marina behind Te Papa can sometimes have resting Spotted Shags and Little Black Shags.

If anyone is interested in finding good birding spites in any part of NZ just go onto eBird and search the hotspots.
